While lights are required on all bikes in Ontario (when its dark) the Dutch and the Germans take it one step further: all bikes must be sold with lights. And because the bikes are sold with lights the lights are usually (a) integrated and thus theft-proof, (b) actually bright enough not to get yourself killed, and (c) battery-free. Yes, battery free! Dynamo lights are for those who understand that they're doing this thing called city cycling, and that their committed, which means committing to safety for starters. Setting up a bike with dynamo lighting isn't cheap, (because we're basically re-integrating the bike after-the-fact, which requires rebuilding the wheel, which is kind of fun, actually), but it's cheaper than driving, and it's cheaper than replacing all the clip-on lights that get stolen all the time. Plus, battery-free! And bright! Like, turning-night-into-day bright.
