Moustache Company History: While the big brands like Specialized and Trek are very new to the E-Bike market (especially in North America) Moustache Bikes have been creating some of the finest and well thought out E-Bikes available in Europe for nearly 6 years. Started in July 2011 by Emmanuel Antonot (previously Cycles Lapierre) and Grégory Sand in the Los Vosges region of France the company exclusively designs and assembles electrically assisted bicycles predominantly using the awesome and trouble free Bosch E-Drive Systems. Today some 20 different models are available from Urban and City Bikes to full off road Mountain Bikes and even Off Road Tandems and super exclusive models designed by super famous French designer Philippe Starck which need to be seen to be believed!

Who buys an e-assist bike ?
Everyone! A city cyclist can cut through gridlock or crammed transit systems and arrive at work sweat-free (with a smile on their face). A recreational cyclist loves an e-bike because it greatly expands the range one can typically do in a day, and if the hills get too big or the distances too long, it’s a press of a button to get a little help. If you’re suffering with your current mode of transport (which could even be your current bike) an e-assist bike is a real game-changer.

Do I have to pedal for the e-assist to work?

You sure do! This is a pedal-assist bike, not an e-assist scooter. Ontario law specifies that all e-bikes must have pedals but unfortunately never indicated the pedals have to work (expect most e-scooters to be illegal within 5 years). A pedal-assist bike employes a high-performance computer that measures your wheel RPM’s, your pedaling RPM’s, and your torque to tune the power to wind, fatigue, or topography.

Does the battery lock to the bike?
Yep. That’s one expensive chunk of Lithium Ion. It locks on to the down-tube and only you can remove it with the key provided.

How long does it take to charge the battery?

It takes five hours to charge the battery from flat to full, and there is no problem if you only charge the battery a little bit, halfway, or whatever. You’ll get over 1000 complete charges with the battery which is typically 5+ years of use before a new battery is required.

Is the unit serviceable?

You bet it is. For years the e-assist market was dominated by small fly-by-night companies with good ideas and no balance sheet. The consumer took all the risk and were often left with technical assistance phone numbers that no longer worked. Today’s systems are made by huge players like Bosch, Yamaha, and Shimano – and they are sophisticated, which that they are updateable, diagnosable, and if something does break, fundamentally repairable.

Why a mid-drive versus a front or rear drive?

Great question! The e-assist market started with front wheel drives about a decade ago. That felt like the wild west, and they weren’t great. On a wet day as you slowed down into a corner the computer might sense (wrongly) that you need a boost and suddenly you’re slipping off the bike while executing a turn. The rear-drive is much better, but is dominated by many unknown players (except Bionx, which is terrific). But, the big problem with rear-drives is that you are forced to use a derailleur system whereas a mid-drive allows any choice of drivetrain system.

What s all this talk about 27.5 wheels?

The 27.5” wheel (aka: 650B) has its origins with the mountain bike as mountain bikers tried to find a balance between start-and-stop acceleration and twisting-turning maneuverability. Sounds a lot like riding in the city, right? The other great thing about 27.5” is the high-pressure yet high-volume tire. That means you get a wide tire footprint for safety and stability without any loss of speed or efficiency.

How is this bike for longer rides on city paths or country rides?

With a 100km range on the battery, you can take this bike out all day! The wider tires are great on gravel surfaces and the riding position is efficient for longer rides.

What’s the deal with disc brakes?

Disc brakes are awesome, here’s why: (1) because they stop the bike close to the center of the wheels rotation you get significantly more power, (2) unlike rim brakes, they sit high above puddles so braking performance is consistent in (most) weather, (3) they require less tuning and the pads last longer. They add a bit of weight, but it’s good weight!

This bike is aluminum, will it dent easily?
Nope! Devinci is Canadian and the city cyclist is well on their radar. Whereas most hybrid bikes are made for Sunday rides and stops at the ice-cream stand, Devinci’s feature a tough frame that can be locked next to steel poles all day while you’re at work (or grabbing an ice-cream!)

Will this bike rust?

Heck no! The great thing about Aluminum frames is that they can’t rust.

The wheels are quick release, how do I prevent theft?

Alas, most bikes sold in North America assume that you will someday put your bike into a car, which means you need to rapidly disassemble it. If your bike is your car, then you’re often left wondering why the wheels are so easy to steal. We recommend bolting the wheels on with a wheel lock system, either from Pinhead (which feature unique keys) or Evo (which use a non-standard tool).

How do I ensure my new bike won’t get stolen?

Estimates are that over 90% of bicycle theft is tied to cash-for-drugs and this (unfortunately) makes every bike a target. Make sure you buy a good U-lock or a chain and your bike will be safe. You can read more about bike theft here.

What’s the warranty?

Lifetime warranty for manufacturer defects on frame and fork, one year on parts. Does not include wear and tear.
