Whether you're tackling your daily commute, exploring gravel roads, or pedaling your way to the top of your local Strava leaderboard; the Hatchet is the one bike to rule them all. This Canadian designed bike perfectly balances speed, stability and responsiveness to feel equally at home on both paved and unpaved roads.
The Hatchets foundation is its lightweight aluminum frame, carbon fork, longer wheelbase, and ample tire clearance making for a silky-smooth yet fast ride. Devinci Company History: Cycles Devinci is what you might call a true Canadian brand, established in Chicoutimi, Quebec in 1987 by two enthusiastic engineering students. In 1990 Felix Gauthier purchased half the company moving the brand into its contemporary role as an international player in both road and mountain bike manufacturing.
The brand has grown its U.S. and international distribution channels and is now a key supplier of professional road, mountain and hybrid bikes not to mention the outstanding success of the Bixi bikes used in bicycle sharing schemes in cities such as Toronto, Montreal and London, England.
What is a gravel bike?
A gravel bike is a high-performance bike designed for speed and distance over (most) any terrain. It’s for people who want to do a long road ride but aren’t interested in a competitive bike that beats up their neck and shoulders. Unlike a road bike it lets you hop over to a quiet gravel path to mix things up on a long Sunday loop. It’s for people who can’t find the time to do an epic long tour but can imagine a week or weekend out on the road. Finally, it’s a tough city bike made for longer distance commutes or inner-city adventure over potholes and streetcar tracks.
Is this a bike that could be used for Bike-packing or Bike Touring?
Great question. Bike-packing seeks to cover as much distance as possible per day through a minimalist, lightweight approach to gear. Bike touring seeks less distances per day but lets you carry more creature comforts. Bike touring hangs weight off the sides of the bike, making the bike wider, slower and less agile while bike-packing adds no width to the bike, keeping all weight within the same vertical plane for maximum agility. The Hatchet series are perfect for bike-packing and lighter multi-day tours.
What’s the difference between the Hatchet Sora and the Hatchet Tiagra?
Parts! The Shimano Sora system uses a 9-speed cogset in the back that doesn’t have the same increments between gears as the 10-speed Tiagra bike. This means that there’s less fine-tuning as your gears help adjust your pedaling RPM’s to slight changes in terrain, topography or wind. The Tiagra system tends to shift faster and crisper. The Tiagra’s crankset features external bearings and a larger radius spindle that greatly increases pedaling efficiency by reducing lateral flex (it’s lighter too). The Sora model is good, but the Tiagra model is definitely better!
What’s the deal with carbon fiber forks?
Carbon fiber is light, stiff, and unlike aluminum – which is also light and stiff – it’s remarkably compliant, making a longer ride more comfortable. Since most road vibration comes up through the fork – which is the leading edge of the bike – it makes sense to use carbon fiber forks, since it gives your neck and shoulders a break over long rides. Carbon fiber also lightens up the front end, adding to overall performance.
What’s the deal with disc brakes?
Disc brakes are awesome, here’s why: (1) because they stop the bike close to the center of the wheels rotation you get significantly more power, (2) unlike rim brakes, they sit high above puddles so braking performance is consistent in (most) weather, (3) they require less tuning and the pads last longer. They add a bit of weight, but it’s good weight!
Can I ride this bike in the city?
One reason people love gravel bikes so much is that they act like speedy road bikes but don’t compromise on strength, especially wheel strength. Whereas most road bikes use super lightweight wheels with reduced spokes, a gravel bike needs strength for rougher terrain, and that includes city cycling too. Add the disc brakes and sudden city stops are as good as rough declines on muddy trails. So, you have a great city bike, a great road bike, and the kind of road bike that modulate between street and trail with uncompromised high performance fun.
This bike is aluminum, will it dent easily?
Nope! Devinci is Canadian and no matter what bike they build, the city cyclist is always on their radar. Whereas most gravel bikes are made for big Sunday loops and stops at coffee shop, Devinci’s feature a tough frame that can be locked next to steel poles all day while you’re at work (or grabbing an espresso!)
How do I ensure my new bike won’t get stolen?
Estimates are that over 90% of bicycle theft is tied to cash-for-drugs and this (unfortunately) makes every bike a target. Make sure you buy a good U-lock or a chain and your bike will be safe. You can read more about bike theft here.
What’s the warranty?
Lifetime warranty for manufacturer defects on frame and fork, one year on parts. Does not include wear and tear.
