Devinci Company History: Cycles Devinci is what you might call a true Canadian brand, established in Chicoutimi, Quebec in 1987 by two enthusiastic engineering students. In 1990 Felix Gauthier purchased half the company moving the brand into its contemporary role as an international player in both road and mountain bike manufacturing.
The brand has grown its U.S. and international distribution channels and is now a key supplier of professional road, mountain and hybrid bikes not to mention the outstanding success of the Bixi bikes used in bicycle sharing schemes in cities such as Toronto, Montreal and London, England.
What’s all this talk about 27.5” wheels?
The 27.5” wheel (aka: 650B) has its origins with the mountain bike as mountain bikers tried to find a balance between start-and-stop acceleration and twisting-turning maneuverability. Sounds a lot like riding in the city, right? The other great thing about 27.5” is the high-pressure yet high-volume tire. That means you get a wide tire footprint for safety and stability without any loss of speed or efficiency.
What’s all this talk about 1x or “one-by” gear systems?
A 1x system simplifies things by using only one chainring up front while using a wide-range of cogs in the back. You don’t get the same climbing-range as a 2x or 3x system, but the argument is that many people don’t use those gears (unless they’re mountain bike or doing loaded touring), so why add the weight and complication? It’s a good argument, and it makes the gears more linear and low maintenance.
What’s the difference between the Cartier Altus and the Cartier Alivio?
A lot! As you move to the Alivio model you get more powerful hydraulic Disc Brakes. Both bikes use a 1x drivetrain (see above) but the Alivio model has more range. The Alivio has a large 36 tooth climbing gear that increases hill-climbing range by 5.5% over the Altus model (which has a smaller 34 tooth). One thing we also love about the Alivio model: anti-theft wheel skewers.
Can I ride this bike in the city?
This bike was made for city riding! Being from Quebec, Devinci knows the urban Canadian cyclist very well. Unlike many other hybrids on the market, Devinci makes bikes that are as great for recreational rides as they are for inner-city use. Compared to their competition, a Devinci’s frame and wheels are stronger, many parts are rust-resistant, and the tires feature a puncture resistant Kevlar layer.
What’s the deal with disc brakes?
Disc brakes are awesome, here’s why: (1) because they stop the bike close to the center of the wheels rotation you get significantly more power, (2) unlike rim brakes, they sit high above puddles so braking performance is consistent in (most) weather, (3) they require less tuning and the pads last longer. They add a bit of weight, but it’s good weight!
How is this bike for longer rides on city paths or country rides?
Unless you’re a speed demon, this bike is terrifically efficient. The wider tires may slow you down a bit but then, they’re terrific if you find yourself on gravel. However, if you’re weighing the bike down with lots camping gear for overnight trips we would recommend a 2x or 3x gear system rather than the more city-oriented 1x.
This bike is aluminum, will it dent easily?
Nope! Devinci is Canadian and the city cyclist is well on their radar. Whereas most hybrid bikes are made for Sunday rides and stops at the ice-cream stand, Devinci’s feature a tough frame that can be locked next to steel poles all day while you’re at work (or grabbing an ice-cream!)
Will this bike rust?
Heck no! The great thing about Aluminum frames is that they can’t rust.
The wheels are quick release, how do I prevent theft?
Alas, most bikes sold in North America assume that you will someday put your bike into a car, which means you need to rapidly disassemble it. If your bike is your car, then you’re often left wondering why the wheels are so easy to steal. We recommend bolting the wheels on with a wheel lock system, either from Pinhead (which feature unique keys) or Evo (which use a non-standard tool).
How do I ensure my new bike won’t get stolen?
Estimates are that over 90% of bicycle theft is tied to cash-for-drugs and this (unfortunately) makes every bike a target. Make sure you buy a good U-lock or a chain and your bike will be safe. You can read more about bike theft here.
What’s the warranty?
Lifetime warranty for manufacturer defects on frame and fork, one year on parts. Does not include wear and tear.
