DAHON was founded on a vision of “green” mobility, a form of transportation that not only serves to keep people healthier, but also preserves the environment for the next generation. Since their humble beginnings in the late 70's with a questionable bike that was designed to fit under a train seat, Dahon has grown into a large respected company with a genuine eye for innovation. Holding over 220 patents and now producing nearly 30 different bikes you are sure to find one that suits you.
Dahon versus Brompton… what’s the diff?
A folding bike is judged by its rideability, foldability, and transportability and Brompton wins on all three. However, a Dahon is a heck of a lot cheaper, so if you’re a student or casual cyclist a Dahon stores better in a small apartment or car trunk than a regular bike.
How is rideability different between Dahon and Brompton?
For a bike to ride well it must have a good footprint, or wheelbase – especially if you have small wheels. A Dahon has a wheelbase that’s generally shorter than a regular bike, which makes it a bit twitchy for longer rides. A Brompton’s wheelbase is longer than a regular bike, an impressive feat since it unfolds bigger than a Dahon and folds smaller.
How is foldability different between Dahon and Brompton?
Dahon can be a bit fussy to fold, requiring “adjustments” mid-fold, whereas the Brompton is an engineer’s dream of perfect collapsibility.
How about folded size between Dahon and Brompton?
When folded the Brompton is a whole foot shorter in length, does not break apart when lifted, and even has a towing position so you can roll it like a suitcase.
So, who’s buying a Dahon, and why?
Brompton was originally made for London train commuters who needed something small when folded, safe when riding something that could fold/unfold rapidly. It’s an everyday bike designed for everyday use. Dahon was designed for automobile users who wanted something that could fit into the trunk of the car and rode well as a casual bike. It’s a great bike for students who want something that they can bring into their apartments or class for the duration they’re in school.
What’s the difference between the Vybe and the Mariner?
The Vybe and the Mariner are just over $100 apart and the difference can be found in the parts. The Mariner, which is made for slushy Toronto streets or salt-water boaters has an assortment of alloy, stainless steel, and galvanized parts to keep rust at bay. It also has a rear rack. The Vybe is much simpler, but gives you all the gears you need (and practical things like fenders!) at a decent price.
Is there a carry-bag for this bike?
There is, but be warned: we do not recommend flying with a Dahon because all the drivetrain parts are on the outside of the fold and can be easily impacted once the bike is in the airplane storage hold.
What’s the warranty?
Lifetime warranty for manufacturer defects on frame and fork, one year on parts. Does not include wear and tear.
