The leaders in bicycle tire technology have always been of German extraction. Any mountain biker or road cyclist has heard about Continental, but Continental has always played the role of performance tire provider, traditionally leaving city cyclists with a poor array of choices. However, with the rise of the city bike in North America we finally have access to Schwalbe tires, and by golly they're great. Schwalbe takes care of the city cyclist with tires that may be heavier than Continentals (who cares?) but have lots of rubber on top for long wear, kevlar belting for puncture resistance, and reflective sidewalls for nighttime visibility.
