When Don Cherry opens his mouth, sometimes the hot air hits the cold and a whirlwind bursts out of nowhere, carrying cyclists, pinkos and people all over Toronto along with it. When we wrote our open letter offering Don Cherry a free pink bike, and with it a chance to backpedal on his silly comments, we did not truly expect the broohaha that ensued. The story was picked up by the Globe and Mail, CBC online, Maclean's magazine, the Star,  CP24 and the blogosphere. We loved it.

The success of our Bike Love Sale on Feb.12, and the diversity of  people who bought bicycles or accessorized their current rides, only proves the bicycle's role as an apolitical, life-enhancing super-machine. With this sale we also launched the finished Don Cherry bike (affectionately nicknamed the Cherry Bomb): a stunning Pashley Tube-rider in pink, with fenders lovingly made plaid by master cycle painter Noah Rosen (All hail: www.velocolour.com).

The Torontoist got on board.

On Monday, OpenFileToronto (the online news source started by the Torontoist's former editor) has posted this excellent article. And with it we are proud to announce the auction for the Cherry Bomb... and like the article suggests, you may have an opportunity to out-bid Councilor Mike Layton who expressed great interest in claiming the bicycle as his own!

The proceeds of the auction will benefit the Darling House for Kids, which is a truly excellent children's hospice/respite home that offers support for the endless and complex routines of care required by children with chronic and life-threatening illnesses. Do check out their website to see the amazing ways they enhance quality of life for not only these children but their families.

So, let's get together and spread the word; tell your friends, call your mom, write your MP, tweet your boss and let's Bid On This Bike!

LET THE AUCTION BEGIN (click your way to Ebay).
